CAN YOU MOVE TO CURACAO?

We are asked this question very often. It’s a valid question. Because even for people with Dutch nationality there are rules and conditions that you will have to meet. Read our blog on this topic. If you do not have Dutch nationality, conditions and sometimes visas also apply. Every foreign national must obtain a residence card to live for an extended period in Curacao. More information about this can be found here.

If you buy real estate, you still have a nice advantage with regard to residence permits. Read here which investment permits apply to Curacao.

WHAT PREPARATIONS SHOULD I MAKE IF I MOVE TO CURACAO:

  1. Arrange the emigration papers on time
  2. Have your pets vaccinated on time and arrange transport on time
  3. Find a good and suitable school for the children and register them on time. See here which schools Curacao has.
  4. Arrange a reliable mover who is also well known on Curacao. You may import your household effects once without import duties, only if you can demonstrate that you are actually going to live on Curacao and register as a citizen.
  5. Book flight tickets on time, take the flight as early as possible in the day so that you still have enough time on Curacao to arrange the first things upon arrival
  6. Arrange internet connection in your new house. One of the providers is Flow, they offer internet and TV signal throughout the island.
  7. Make sure that you take over the Aqualectra ( water and electricity supplier) account upon delivery of your new home on Curacao so that you can transfer the water and electricity bill to your name.
  8. Ask around which general practitioners and dentists people like and have a practice in your new neighbourhood. Make an appointment to meet your new doctor.
  9. If you do not bring your own car, arrange a temporary rental car or buy a car as soon as possible. Life on Curacao is really difficult without your own transport.
  10. Learn Papiamentu! You can get by with Dutch or English on Curacao, but it is so much more fun if you can also speak the local language. Take a course online or take private lessons. Once you live on the island you can quickly practice it daily.
  11. Finally, but actually most importantly, take a good look at the drizzly weather in your homecountry, the gray skies and the amount of stress people have. You will not see this on Curacao. Every day a blue sky, sun, white beaches and happy people in traffic who are not in a hurry. BON BINI NA KORSOW!
