The padel craze on Curaçao: courts, children’s lessons and events

SPORT & LIFE ON CURAÇAO · Updated 24 October 2026

Curaçao knows the power of sport. The island has produced baseball talent that conquered the world, celebrated a historic appearance at the football World Cup and watched Jean-Julien Rojer win on tennis’s biggest stages. Now another racket sport is making its mark: padel. With clubs, lessons for children and adults, and popular tournaments, it is becoming much more than a pleasant hour on court.

For residents and regular visitors, padel adds another dimension to island life. It brings a sporting rhythm to the working week, connects people and gives families something to discover together. For holidaymakers, it is a way to stay active between beach days and meet other players. For young athletes, it offers another opportunity to develop their talents.

Where can you play padel on Curaçao? Where can children take lessons, and what is happening around the island’s courts? From local clubs to tournaments, padel is becoming an increasingly visible part of life on the island.

From busy courts to major events

Padel’s popularity on Curaçao extends beyond everyday play. The CHATA Padel Tournament at Padel X brought together teams from tourism and other businesses. Demand was so strong that a waiting list formed, showing how the sport connects people from different parts of island life. Read about the CHATA tournament.

A padel tournament can be a competition, a company outing and a meeting place all at once. Colleagues who normally meet behind a desk find themselves together at the net. Friends come to watch, and new players discover that beginners can join in too.

Community organisations also use padel to bring people together. The Children’s Museum Curaçao organises Padel for Play, a corporate tournament raising funds for children who need additional support. A sporting event can therefore make a difference beyond the court. Read about Padel for Play.

That combination matters for a growing sport. Recreational players keep clubs lively, events attract new audiences and lessons encourage people to keep playing. An introduction can soon become a regular habit.

Children on court: the next generation

Young players deserve a place in the story. Padel lessons for children are now available on Curaçao. Padel X specifically offers children’s lessons from age five. Its academy also provides individual coaching, sessions for two and small group training. According to the club, children’s sessions focus on skills, games, teamwork and enjoyment. Age information and Padel X academy.

Ultimate Padel also hosted a Kids Padel Clinic during Padel for Play, giving children the chance to train with instructors. Initiatives like these introduce families to the sport and help young players get involved. Read about the children’s clinic.

There is no publicly available island-wide count of children taking padel lessons. The lessons and clinics on offer do show that young players have become part of the local padel community.

For parents, there is more to consider than whether a club offers lessons. Is the group suitable for the child’s age? Will there be enough individual attention? Is it a one-off clinic or a course? Are suitable rackets available, and is there a next step for children who want to continue?

Children who enjoy training also learn to take turns, work with a partner and handle winning and losing. They do not all need to become professional athletes. A welcoming sporting environment is valuable for the friendships, exercise and confidence it provides, while leaving room for those who want to progress further.

Curaçao knows how big a small sporting nation can be

Baseball as a familiar example

Andruw Jones, Andrelton Simmons and Kenley Jansen are among the Curaçaoan names who reached Major League Baseball. Source: MLB. Their careers give young athletes a relatable example: someone with roots on the same island can reach the highest level. That makes the comparison with an emerging sport such as padel interesting, without suggesting that the two sports are equally developed locally.

Football: a historic World Cup qualification and appearance

Jean-Julien Rojer: an example from racket sports

Curaçao also has an inspiring example in tennis. Jean-Julien Rojer won doubles Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon, the US Open and Roland Garros. His career shows young athletes on the island how far talent, training and determination can take them. Source: ATP Tour.

Planning your own game

Choose your group, then your court

A first padel experience is more enjoyable when everyone shares the same expectations. Decide whether you want to try it casually, practise or play a competitive match. For four beginners, a shared introductory lesson can help: a coach can explain serving, positioning and playing the ball off the glass.

If you are on your own or travelling as a pair, ask about group lessons, activities and ways to meet other players. Padel X, for example, points players towards a WhatsApp community and social activities. You do not always need to bring a complete group of four. Information on joining other players.

Check what the price includes

Compare playing time and participant numbers as well as the headline price. Court hire is different from a lesson charged per person. Ask whether rackets, balls and coaching are included. A doubles court costing CG 60 per hour works out at CG 15 each when split between four paying players, before extras. Longer bookings and coaching will change the total.

Allow for the climate and travel time

Choose a time when everyone will be comfortable playing in the heat. Bring drinking water and allow for breaks, especially with children. A roof can make play more comfortable but does not remove the outdoor heat. Check the journey from your accommodation too: these clubs are concentrated around Willemstad, so visitors staying in Banda Abou or Westpunt should allow for the drive.

Book ahead and check the conditions

Check availability in the club’s booking system. Confirm the date, start time, duration and court type, and read the cancellation conditions. For outdoor courts, ask what happens if rain prevents play. For children’s lessons, check whether missed sessions can be made up and whether you are booking individual sessions or a full course.

Padel as part of living on Curaçao

People considering a move to Curaçao often start with the property, neighbourhood and distance to work or school. But an ordinary week also determines how at home a place feels. Where will you exercise? What can the children do after school? Where will you meet people outside work?

A padel club can become a regular meeting place. Parents bring children to lessons, friends arrange a weekly game and new residents meet people who share their interests. When exploring a neighbourhood, visiting a sports club can tell you as much about everyday life as an afternoon at the best-known attractions.

Padel’s growth adds another sporting opportunity to Curaçao. The island has already shown that international ambition does not require a large population. On the courts, the story is taking shape through entrepreneurs building clubs, returning players, children taking lessons and tournaments bringing the community together.
